For our last day of our winter/spring session, Arts on the Block took a field trip to the Hirshhorn Museum and Sculpture Garden, viewing and engaging with all types of work from film, to sculpture, to more traditional media paintings. Everyone enjoyed the fun art-filled trip, and later we ventured to Plaza Art Supply in downtown Silver Spring for some shopping.

A big thank you to Jan our executive director, and to Art 4 Moore and Plaza Arts who made the shopping trip possible. Our apprentices loved shopping for their new art materials, eager to create new work with their purchases as soon as possible. It was truly a great season with you all, and I’m so glad I got to be apart of it.

Mock Interviews and a Surprise Birthday Celebration

AOB would like to send a huge thank you to the job interviewers that came by the studio — namely Jose Dominguez from Pyramid Atlantic, Silvia Huezo from Red Hue Boutique, and Emily McDonnell from Montgomery County Department of Recreation. Resumes in hand, new and returning apprentices got to experience a job interview. Afterwards, interviewers gave apprentices great feedback and constructive criticism so that each could rise to the occasion as they venture into the world of work. Without a doubt, each apprentice will strive to do great things in the future, and AOB is proud to be a supporter and contributor to their success.

There was also a surprise birthday celebration planned by the apprentices and myself for our very own Lead Artist Carien Quiroga who had no idea what surprises were in store for her later in the day. The apprentices and I surprised her with a wonderful cake and of course–singing and many well wishes for the future. Carien, we all hope you had a wonderful day, and all of us from AOB are so grateful for you and your passion for advancing youth development and art education. March 20, 2013 -Aprill H.
