Aselin nowAselin Lands, 2007-2008 AOB Alumna- Montgomery County Public Schools Art Teacher, Fine Artist, and AOB Board Member

“My work is an exploration of my own experiences being a natural-haired female; the constant tension between society’s perception of natural hair and my own struggle with the acceptance of my natural hair. I am examining the psychological aspects of going through the transition of understanding my nataselin drawingsural hair. In this body of self-portraits, I am examining myself in the mirror, facing a reality that lies within me. I use raw pigments, bold colors, and harsh brushstrokes to capture the subtleties in expressions from moments of disgust, angst, ambiguity, to moments of faith and confidence. In my paintings, I try to illustrate the psychological process of convincing myself of my look.”
