“My work is an exploration of my own experiences being a natural-haired female; the constant tension between society’s perception of natural hair and my own struggle with the acceptance of my natural hair. I am examining the psychological aspects of going through the transition of understanding my natural hair. In this body of self-portraits, I am examining myself in the mirror, facing a reality that lies within me. I use raw pigments, bold colors, and harsh brushstrokes to capture the subtleties in expressions from moments of disgust, angst, ambiguity, to moments of faith and confidence. In my paintings, I try to illustrate the psychological process of convincing myself of my look.”
Throughout spring, Arts on the Block will highlight the people, places and programs we love. Our goal is to #AOBHitRefresh on all of the relationships that make up our creative community. It’s spring, what better time to reconnect? Tell us your #AOBHitRefresh story!
