Commissions: Art in the Service of Community

Arts on the Block specializes in working on commissions, not only because of the income they generate for the program but because they create for the participants a tangible introduction to the world of the working artist. While apprentices master several disciplines, mosaics have become the most popular medium — and an effective vehicle for teaching transferable skills: patience, teamwork, attention to detail, confidence, pride in accomplishment and beyond.

Working with schools, government agencies and business owners under the direction of seasoned professional artists, apprentices gain a strong sense of belonging to and enriching their community. They learn the value of public art and understand its potential impact.

Clients as well find the process rewarding:

“We worked with Arts on the Block during our renovation of the historic Waterfront Tower in Southwest DC. The collaboration helped showcase the work of talented underserved young people and demonstrated our company’s commitment to the local community. The process, the product and the feedback we’ve received have all exceeded our expectations!”

Artwork for Sale: Art for Private Enjoyment

In addition to large-scale installations, the talented young apprentices in the Pour Your ART Out program also create a variety of works for commission or individual sale.  Mirrors, vases, plates, boxes, panels and signs in a variety of sizes, shapes, colors and materials are produced, each exhibiting the exceptional talents of the AOB apprentices.
