After ten years providing real-life work experiences in the visual arts to youth in Montgomery County, Arts on the Block initiated Pour Your ART Out in Washington, DC.
Pour Your ART Out (PYAO) transforms talented teens into Apprentice Artists to learn about art and develop job skills that can be used in any career. Apprentices work in teams on artwork for commissioned by an array of clients, as well as individual projects. In the process, they learn about teamwork, professionalism, entrepreneurship, and countless other transferable skills.
PYAO-DC apprentices are recruited through the DC Summer Youth Employment Program. They represent an array of neighborhoods and schools throughout the District. Apprentice Artists receive professional training from our teaching artists, visiting arts, and design professionals.
Arts on the Block is the only organization in the Washington, DC area offering youth the opportunity to learn about the intersection of art, design and business by engaging them in real-world art projects. Today, hundreds of individual artworks—from park benches to large-scale murals—grace public and private spaces throughout the area. These commissions transform neighborhoods and youth in their pursuit of creativity, collaboration and community.
