Common Ground

Empowering Self-Advocacy and Community Change

AOB, in partnership with YMCA Youth and Family Services, Imagination Station and Gandhi Brigade and with funding from the Jim and Carol Trawick Foundation, has inaugurated a new, transformative program in Silver Spring, Maryland, aimed at bringing disenfranchised and disadvantaged youth into the community planning process. Called “Common Ground,” the program involves dozens of middle and high school students from the Nob Hill and Carroll Avenue Quebec Terrace neighborhoods and guides them through the planning and execution of a public “pop-up” event within the community.

The program, which runs for eight months out of the year, empowers the participants to develop leadership, teamwork and communication skills — critical for achievement in whatever endeavor they may pursue. The student-led efforts carry the potential to become permanent additions to the community calendar and atmosphere.
