Sparking an Interest in the Arts
Beginning in 2011, AOB, in conjunction with ten other providers in a Collaboration Council-sponsored initiative, helped launch a new arts program targeted at underserved middle school students in the Montgomery County. Called “Excel Beyond the Bell,” the program enlists the aid of professional teaching artists in offering after-school programs at select schools, chosen on the basis of the greatest need for supplemental services.
The program runs for three consecutive 10-week sessions and features two-hour weekly classes that lead students through an array of artistic endeavors. Interested students explore a variety of media and avenues of expression including cartooning, printmaking, mosaics, and in collaboration with Imagination Stage, improvisation and theater techniques.
