Art on Route 29

“I think we are fortunate to have an arts program that can be tapped into for projects like this.”- Stacy Coletta, Manager of Customer Amenities Unit/Transit Services for Montgomery County Department of Transportation

rafaelOur Pour Your ART Out (PYAO) program transforms talented teens into Apprentice Artists through six week summer or fourteen week school-year workshops. They are selected through a rigorous application process and are taught to consult with an array of clients to design projects, manage budgets, create and install professional mosaic and three-dimensional artwork, and evaluate the process of execution. They also gain mastery of advanced art theory and application, teamwork skills, professionalism, entrepreneurship, and countless other transferable skills.

In summer 2017, under the direction of professional Teaching Artists Kristine Aono and Julia Davenport, the Montgomery County cohort of PYAO was privileged to work with the Montgomery County Department of Transportation (MCDOT) on thirteen unique mosaic medallions for installation at stops along the new RIDE ON Extra route along Rockville Pike. Presented with 42 options, MCDOT leaders selected images that best reflected the beauty, vibrancy, and focal point of the community surrounding each bus stop.
